North Strand Course Spotlight: Farmstead Golf Links

Over the years, Farmstead Golf Links has become one of the unsung stars of the North Strand golf scene. This popular Willard Byrd design has built its reputation on the popularity of its smooth, fast greens and a welcoming atmosphere.

Its collection of memorable golf holes includes three noteworthy holes.

Farmstead’s opening hole, a 420-yard par 4, kicks your adrenaline into high gear right from the jump. The pond on the right side helps provide the aesthetics, but the fairway offers ample room to hit driver off the tee. Despite its length from the tips, No. 1 is very manageable from the blue (387 yards) and white tees (367 yards). Avoid the fairway bunker, and a solid start is attainable.

Par fives typically tempt big hitters to get aggressive, but the 547-yard, par-5 ninth is every bit a three-shot hole.  The landing area of the tee is plentiful, and a nice drive and second shot with a long iron or fairway wood are essential to leaving you a short wedge approach for a chance at par or better. But the green at No. 9 is Farmstead’s smallest and falls off on the left side, so getting it close requires a precise approach.

You didn’t think we’d forget Farmstead’s finisher, did you? Everyone’s favorite hole here is the mammoth 767-yard, par-6 18th hole.  One of America’s longest golf holes, No. 18 tees off in South Carolina and concludes in the Tar Heel state. It is, without question, the hole people leave Farmstead talking about. There is plenty of fairway to land your drive, so players shouldn’t find much trouble off the tee. There is water that runs up the left side the last 200 yards, but the challenge at 18 is as much mental as physical. Take a par 5 approach to it, with just one more shot.

The PGA 5 is among our packages offering Farmstead as a course choice – and a $100 gift card for each golfer, valid at this and all courses affiliated with this package for food, merchandise, beverages and same-day replays.

Rise to the Elite this Spring

When it comes to course selection, a long-awaited spring golf getaway is no occasion to mess around with anything less than a sure thing. That’s where our Elite Package can make your planning a breeze.

Play at least three rounds to take advantage of this deal’s special pricing, or go as many as five. Your choices are among five designs that each brings its own special flair to the proceedings. They include:

Arcadian Shores – Rees Jones’ first-ever solo design resides in “The Golf Capital of the World,” and what better way to test the handiwork of the man known worldwide as “The (U.S.) Open Doctor” than to take on this design? It has now completed several upgrades, including a brand-new clubhouse, new cart paths and new greens – taking an exceptional design concept to another level.

Arrowhead Country Club – Tom Jackson, whose name appears on several additional designs in the area, teamed up with U.S. Open champion Raymond Floyd to deliver a 27-hole masterpiece nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway. Along with three 9-hole layouts that each present its own distinct challenge, Arrowhead is renowned for its exceptional conditioning on a year-round basis.

Prestwick – Following in the footsteps of his Father, P.B. Dye has become one of games most renowned architects. You get the ultimate combination at Prestwick, where Pete and P.B. Dye have created a links-style masterpiece containing several of their trademark elements, including bulkhead-protected greens, stairway bunkers and starting and finishing holes that border a large lake.

Tidewater – The Ken Tomlinson design gained a quick reputation as “The Pebble Beach of the East” upon bursting onto the Grand Strand golf scene with a visually stunning display of golf holes – many of which play scenically through and along the salt marshes of Cherry Grove.

The Jones Course at Sea Trail Resort – Rees Jones gives you another chance to experience his design genius at this popular track. Players of all skill levels will enjoy an exceptional round on a straightforward golf course with typical Jones mounding and wide fairways surrounded by water, which comes into play on 11 holes here.

Course Spotlight: Long Bay Club

The Myrtle Beach area has its fair share of courses featuring the leading names in golf course design – including the likes of Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Arnold Palmer and Tom Jackson, to name a few.

And when it comes to the game’s greatest all-time player, Jack Nicklaus, you have two course options that bookend the Grand Strand: Pawleys Plantation to the south in Pawleys Island, and the Golden Bear’s offering along the north end at Long Bay Club – the focus of our course spotlight here.

Along with its sister course, Long Bay Club is celebrating its 30th year on the Myrtle Beach golf scene. Long Bay continues to shine as a shot-maker’s course, and is a popular inclusion in golf vacation packages for its unique challenge and visually stunning presentation.

The “eye candy” is readily apparent at such holes as No. 10, sporting a fairway surrounded by waste bunkering that’s flanked by dramatic mounding, and leads to an elevated green; No. 7, a sprawling par 5 that wraps around a large lake and presents a compelling risk-reward option for your second shot; and No. 13, the island green par 3 that offers little room for error as you attempt to fly it to the putting surface.

No. 13 is just one of many holes at Long Bay that define Nicklaus’ approach here compared to Pawleys Plantation. While its sister design is fairly tight throughout and squeezes you more off the tee, Long Bay offers more room to let it fly with your driver – but places a premium on your approach shots. Come ready with your short game here, as high-trajectory shot making is in high demand here.

Our Captain’s Choice Package is an easy way to include Long Bay Club with several nearby options for an outstanding golf getaway, including Farmstead, Glen Dornoch and Grande Dunes Resort Course among others. Click here to view available tee times!

Package Spotlight: The PGA 5

A variety of factors play into deciding which golf package your group will choose for its next trip, but the PGA 5 from East Coast Golf Management likely has everything you and your buddies are looking for.

Starting at the top, the five-round package, which can be purchased with or without accommodations, includes a $100 gift card that can be used for food, merchandise, beverages and same-day replays.

Eagles Nest Golf Course

The golf-only package can be purchased for less than $250 so the gift card merely pushes the value proposition from very good to ridiculously good.

But value is conveyed in ways other than price, and ultimately, it’s a great experience your group is seeking.

Rest easy.

The PGA 5 package allows you to choose among 22 ECGM courses, including layouts like Rivers Edge and Crow Creek. Rivers Edge, an Arnold Palmer design, features several holes that play along the Shallotte River and some of the area’s most stunning views.

Crow Creek installed new bentgrass greens in 2017 and the results have been spectacular, bolstering what was already regarded as one of the area’s hidden gems.

Farmstead Golf Links is home to the Myrtle Beach area’s only par 6, the 767-yard 18th, a challenge Golf Digest ranked among America’s most fun holes to play.

Most of the PGA 5’s courses play along the north end – Thistle, Crow Creek, Pearl East and West, Rivers Edge, Beachwood, Sandpiper Bay, Brunswick Plantation, Eagle Nest, Crown Park, Meadowlands, Lockwood Folly, Azalea Sands, Diamondback and Brick Landing – but if your group prefers a more central or southern location, the package delivers there as well.

Wachesaw East, Blackmoor, International Club and River Oaks provide the PGA 5 with the geographic diversity many golfers seek.

This is a package that has steadily grown in popularity, and will continue to do so.

Course Spotlight: Arcadian Shores

Opened in 1974, Arcadian Shores Golf Club is one of the oldest courses here on the Grand Strand. It was the first solo design by Rees Jones, and resembles many of the elements found at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, a neighboring course designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Rees’ father.

Upon its initial opening, Arcadian Shores received immediate notoriety. Thanks to its strategic bunkering, natural lakes, and innovative layout it quickly became a favorite of local and visiting golfers alike.

Although the course has attracted many for its sheer historical value, golfers today flock to it for a different reason. After more than 40 years of wear and tear, Arcadian Shores closed for 4 ½ months last summer to implement a number of significant upgrades to the course and clubhouse.

When the course reopened in the fall of 2017, it was clear that the renovation had breathed new life into the fairways at Arcadian Shores. The course now features Sunday Ultradwarf Bermuda greens as well as new irrigation systems around each green to ensure that they remain the best at the beach. Hundreds of trees were removed and dozens of areas around the course have been beautified. Brand-new cart paths and on-course bathrooms add to the extravagance of the “new” Arcadian. And after your round, the brand-new clubhouse overlooking the 18th green is the ideal spot for a post-round drink.

Since its return to its former glory, Arcadian Shores has met and surpassed its previous status in the Myrtle Beach golf scene.

Include Arcadian Shores in the itinerary of your next golf trip by checking out the Captain’s Choice Golf Package. With more than 80 courses to choose from, you are sure to have the golf trip of a lifetime. Click here to check out available courses and rates.

Course Spotlight: Carolina National

As the first signature design in the Carolinas by popular PGA Tour player Fred Couples, Carolina National Golf Club offers 27 holes of player-friendly golf in a spectacular setting nestled along the banks of the scenic Lockwood Folly River.

Carolina National’s three nines each provide a distinctly different feel and style of play:

  • Ibis, featuring forced carries and water on seven of its nine holes;
  • Egret, the more traditional designs of this trio that plays inland amid native pines; and
  • Heron, a more open layout that most brilliantly accentuates the beauty of Carolina National’s Lockwood Folly River surroundings.

Making its debut on the Grand Strand golf scene in 1998, Carolina National celebrates its 20-year anniversary in 2018 and has earned accolades along the way that include a coveted 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest’s “Places to Play,” and a citation by the National Audubon Society as a natural environmental and wildlife preserve.

With immaculate Bermuda grass playing surfaces provided on a year-round basis, Couples drew upon his Masters pedigree (he won the event in 1992) to bring an “Augusta feel” to Carolina National with expertly framed tee shots, strategic bunkering and striking hole visuals that keep its devoted players coming back year after year.
