Often referred to as “the jewel at the end of a Strand of pearls” along the Black River, Wedgefield Plantation Golf Club lies equidistant between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. A 45 minute drive south of the Grand Strand is worth your effort to take pleasure in golf as it was intended to be played– confident, unhurried, and rewarding good shots. Fashioned from a Revolutionary War-era Lowcountry rice plantation, Wedgefield Plantation today epitomizes Southern hospitality – gracious customer service, target fairways edged in mossy trees and miles of flowering landscape.
The beauty of the terrain only complements your golf game if you play deliberately (expect challenges and double bogies if not). Long-ball hitters can reach the par-5’s with an iron, and more conventional golfers might try a mid- to long-iron to lay up and then pitch in for a birdie. The par-4 14th demands 2 strategic carries over water with the promise of a birdie if you stay out of trouble. Later, on the 17th, a short (under 450 yards) par-5, you can birdie this if you are accurate. All in all here, pay particular attention to your second shots from the fairways; more than the drives, they define whether you can ultimately boast about a low score or not.
Designed by J. Porter Gibson, Wedgefield is an 18-hole, par 72 Bermuda-grass course. It measures 7072 yards and has a course rating of 72.7 and a slope rating of 132, plus 5 sets of tees.
